I registered my interest in volunteering in 2024 and have now been working with the Spade Brigade (formerly Wicklow Hospice Gardening Volunteers) for nearly 2 years. The schedule is generally every second weekend on a Saturday or Sunday for 3 hours. This worked perfectly for me as I can travel to be with my elderly dad on alternate weekends.
I can honestly say this is one of my better decisions in life! I’ve met such lovely people who are very happy to talk about plants and anything else, and share their knowledge. I’ve improved my gardening skills and am also glad to be giving back a little in life. We turn neglected spaces back into beautiful green and colourful landscapes for others to visit, sit and enjoy.
I would encourage others to find an opportunity that feeds their soul like this and leads them to new companions in life. I certainly will be looking for more opportunities in the future.
