Andriy says ‘volunteering is the most fulfilling way to spend my leisure time’

My story of volunteering began about fifteen years ago, rooted in the vibrant communities of my hometown, Kharkiv, Ukraine. It started with the very hands-on work of the Catholic Church Street Kitchens and the environmental activism of the Green Front. These early experiences laid the groundwork for what would become a deep-seated commitment, leading me to volunteer with incredible organisations like the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, and UNESCO.

When the shadow of war fell upon my country, compelling me to leave, there was no hesitation about how I would contribute. My skills as an interpreter and hospitality steward found purpose across Europe, in the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Germany, and France, supporting those displaced. And then, Ireland welcomed me. From my second day on these shores, I dedicated myself to assisting both the Irish and Ukrainian communities, offering every ounce of my ability.

In Dublin, I was privileged to work with the An Siol Community Development Centre in Stoneybatter. I owe immense gratitude to its manager at the time, Mr. Owen Binchy, a truly great man with a big heart, whose support was unwavering. It was also at this centre that the Ukrainian Star social club was based, a community I was very much a part of.

Upon my relocation to County Wicklow, I was delighted to join the Wicklow Volunteer Centre. This opened doors to several new avenues of service, including the community spirit of Bray Tidy Towns, the welcoming embrace of Failte Isteach, and the commendable work of the Liberty charity shop.

There’s a saying among my people that “The best rest is a change of task,” and I find profound truth in it. I relish the diversity of volunteering roles, observing how my involvement subtly yet significantly benefits the community. While the immediate impact isn’t always visible – a slow, steady change – there are moments of profound satisfaction: a planted flower begins to sprout, or individuals I’ve assisted are inspired to join the ranks of volunteers. It’s in these quiet victories that a community, step by careful step, truly begins to flourish.

Volunteering is also a wonderful conduit for forging new connections. Some acquaintances are met purely through shared events, while others weave their way into my daily life, joining me on various endeavours. Each new person encountered holds the potential for invaluable insights and advice. I owe much gratitude to everyone I volunteer with.

For me, volunteering is the most fulfilling way to spend my leisure time. It’s a remarkable balm for the soul, bringing inner peace and harmony that few other pursuits can offer. I see friends across the globe embracing the call to volunteer, and I am driven to encourage even more people to partake in this good work, to better the world in the most peaceful and profound way possible.
