My name is Jiyu. I have been involved in several volunteer roles for over six months now, through both the Wicklow Volunteer Centre and other sources. The groups I’ve been working with include ALONE, Greystones Family Resource Centre, Greystones Sea Scouts, and the Bray Community Addiction Team (BCAT).
It is undeniable that volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with people in the community. You’ll always meet individuals you’ve never encountered before, people who open the door to a new world for you.
If we look far enough back into our evolutionary history as primates, living in groups within complex social systems was one of our defining traits. Once you truly grasp the importance of others and how profoundly their presence can influence your life, volunteering in any role becomes both a meaningful accomplishment and a deeply rewarding experience.
I encourage everyone: be brave, start volunteering, and get involved in whatever way you can, for however long you’re able to give. Believe me, volunteering has the power to brighten both your life and the lives of others.
