My journey as a volunteer: From Ukraine to Wicklow

Hello! My name is Maryna, & for the past few months, I’ve been embracing the spirit of giving back through volunteer work in County Wicklow. Coming from Ukraine, a place where community support has become more crucial than ever, I’ve found a new sense of purpose in helping others during my time here.

I vividly remember my first volunteering event in October 2023 at the Glen-to-Glen event in Glendalough. It was a hike/sports walk along a set route, where I served as a marshal assisting with directions. The event was a fundraising initiative organised by Our Lady’s Hospice. I was truly impressed by the turnout & the spirit of the participants. The experience of seeing so many people come together for a cause was inspiring.

My participation in the St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Bray marked my first experience at this vibrant festival. I was delighted to assist the organisers with various tasks, which gave me a unique insight into this important cultural event. The warmth & welcoming nature of the Irish people were on full display, making the experience even more memorable.

Another notable volunteering experience was at St Saviours Arklow during Easter. I helped the organisers communicate with attendees & manage the event, ensuring that everyone who came to the church felt welcomed & valued. The sense of community & shared celebration was palpable, enhancing the joy of the occasion.

The impact of volunteering on my life has been profound. It is now an integral part of who I am. It has not only allowed me to meet new friends but also to feel better about myself, knowing I’m making a difference. It’s amazing how volunteering has helped me gain valuable contacts & learn more about local traditions.

Would I recommend volunteering? Absolutely! To my family, friends, & colleagues, volunteering offers a unique opportunity to grow, give back, & connect with the community. It’s a fulfilling experience that has helped me find stability & joy during a challenging time in my life.

For anyone looking to make a difference, remember that every little bit helps & the connections you make while volunteering can last a lifetime.
