Rosario says that one of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering has been the sense of community it fosters.

My journey as a volunteer began only a few months ago, after my retirement. I thought it would be nice to give something back to the community now that I have more free time at my disposal.

I joined I-Vol online and from there I got a phone call explaining to me the process of applying for volunteer roles. One of the roles that appealed to me was that of a Receptionist at Bray Lakers, a social club for young people and adults with intellectual difficulties, and I applied to it. As someone who has always valued education, I saw this as an opportunity to keep in touch with young people.

My role as a receptionist involves answering the phone and emails as well as dealing with administrative tasks and queries. I like welcoming members as they come to participate in a variety of activities such as Cookery, Art or Music, and Dance. I also meet parents and carers who come to the centre and I talk to the teachers and staff who work there. Every week brings something different to do and everyone is very friendly.

Although it is early days, I have enjoyed being a volunteer and every Monday when I leave the Centre, I feel energised and grateful for having met such wonderful people. Volunteering has deepened my empathy for others. One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering has been the sense of community it fosters.

Volunteering has taught me that my giving is as important as what I receive and how much I am enriched by the people I meet. I am grateful for the opportunities to serve others through volunteering.

I encourage everyone to explore volunteering in some capacity. It doesn’t matter how small the effort may seem, every contribution counts. The act of giving back is immensely rewarding. I look forward to continuing this journey knowing that each step taken in giving time to others is a step towards contributing to a better society.
