I started volunteering just a couple of months ago; it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, but I thought that an irregular work schedule and some health issues would be in the way of finding a suitable activity. When I browsed all the open volunteer roles, I discovered that I was very wrong and that there is such a variety of activities that everyone can find something that it’s possible for them to do – even at home, in their own time, which is what I’m doing.
I’ve been drawing and writing greeting cards for nursing home residents, which is something I truly enjoy doing; I can manage the amount of work and when to deliver it, which is absolutely great for anyone who – for various reasons – can’t commit to fixed hours and regular deadlines.
I put my heart into making these cards, hoping they will put a big smile on their recipient’s faces, especially if they’re not having the best day. I hope that knowing that someone is thinking of them and putting in time and effort to make something for them, will make them feel connected to the community around them even if they can no longer be an active part of it.
I really encourage everyone to browse through the Wicklow Volunteer Centre website and get involved. In a world where money and personal gain have become the only drive to action for many people, small acts of kindness and genuine compassion make a massive difference and remind us that we are part of a whole.
